چکیده

Abstract. Precision, accuracy, and temporal resolution are key to making full use of atmospheric trace gas records in ice cores. These aspects will become especially crucial for cores that aim extend the core record last 1.5 Myr, i.e., across Mid-Pleistocene Transition (as currently drilled within European project Beyond EPICA – Oldest Ice Core (BE-OIC)). The from this period is expected be close bedrock and, due glacier flow, extremely thinned with 15 000 years climate history contained only 1 m ice. Accordingly, a century-scale resolution, sample vertical extent must reduced few centimeters containing about 1–2 mL air STP. We present novel combined system extraction simultaneous measurement CO2, CH4, N2O concentrations, as well δ13CO2, which achieves cm (3.5×3.5 cross section) precisions 0.4 ppm, 3 ppb, 0.04 ‰, respectively, sublimation tests standard over gas-free This accomplished by employing directional continuous laser-induced followed analysis quantum cascade laser absorption spectrometer (QCLAS). Besides low volume requirements capabilities, described method holds additional advantages previous methods, including immunity highly specific QCLAS drilling fluid contamination non-destructive nature spectroscopic analysis. was extensively tested sublimating introduction determine accuracy characterize potential artifacts. High-resolution continuous-flow analysis setup for water isotopic measurement from ice cores using laser spectroscopy

Here we present an experimental setup for water stable isotope (δO and δD) continuous-flow measurements and provide metrics defining the performance of the setup during a major ice core measurement campaign (Roosevelt Island Climate Evolution; RICE). We also use the metrics to compare alternate systems. Our setup is the first continuousflow laser spectroscopy system that is using off-axis integ...

Multi-species gas sensing using monolithic widely tuneable laser diodes

Widely tuneable laser diodes operating in the 1520 ≤ λ ≤ 1570 nm are characterised and compared for use as sources for tuneable laser diode gas absorption spectroscopy. Three gases hydrogen cyanide, ammonia and acetylene with overlapping absorption features within the 50 nm tuning range of the devices were targeted employing wavelength modulation spectroscopy with second harmonic detection.

Aerosol information content analysis of multi-angle high spectral resolution measurements and its benefit for high accuracy greenhouse gas retrievals

New generations of space-borne spectrometers for the retrieval of atmospheric abundances of greenhouse gases require unprecedented accuracies as atmospheric variability of long-lived gases is very low. These instruments, such as GOSAT and OCO-2, typically use a high spectral resolution oxygen channel (O2 A-band) in addition to CO2 and CH4 channels to discriminate changes in the photon path-leng...

Dual-Section DFB-QCLs for Multi-Species Trace Gas Analysis

We report on the dynamic behavior of dual-wavelength distributed feedback (DFB) quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) in continuous wave and intermittent continuous wave operation. We investigate inherent etaloning effects based on spectrally resolved light-current-voltage (LIV) characterization and perform time-resolved spectral analysis of thermal chirping during long (>5 μs) current pulses. The theo...
